Psalm 96 - A prayer for the world
I like this psalm, because it’s a departure from those other psalms that just depict the world as being against the psalmist… which it was! Don’t get me wrong, the world was indeed waiting at the psalmist’s door to destroy him, and the psalmist was ideed praying for God’s justice, and God’s justice was surely going to result in harsh judgement of those surrounding godless nations. But, you see the psalmist’s true heart for his surrounding God-less neigbors… that instead of living lives of destruction, that they live lives of faith in their creator. I know it’s what I want for them.
I want justice. Where murderers murder, I want them executed. Where rapers rape, well I want them executed as well. Same with child molestors and terrorists. I’m just being honest… and it is not out of a feeling of vengeance, because it doesn’t make me feel good when people die. It isn’t out of fairness, because killing a murderer does not make it fair that an innocent is killed. It isn’t out of punishment, because killing someone will teach them nothin, and it will never bring back the innocence they have taken. However, given their evil deeds, taking their life is just. But even still, I have a far preferable outcome that I would much rather see… that those would do evil, would instead love God, and retreat from their evil. I would prefer that… with all my heart, I would far prefer that. In fact, it is what I pray for, though I will not see it… not in my lifetime. And once acts are done, they call for justice… so given the justice God will judge us all with, I lean on His justice, knowing evil will be repaid with justice, as will good, and urging the world to choose good.
1 Sing to the LORD a new song;
      sing to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Sing to the LORD, praise his name;
      proclaim his salvation day after day. 3 Declare his glory among the nations,
      his marvelous deeds among all peoples. 4 For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;
      he is to be feared above all gods. 5 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
      but the LORD made the heavens. 6 Splendor and majesty are before him;
      strength and glory are in his sanctuary. 7 Ascribe to the LORD, O families of nations,
      ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 8 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
      bring an offering and come into his courts. 9 Worship the LORD in the splendor of his [a] holiness;
      tremble before him, all the earth. 10 Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns.”
      The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;
      he will judge the peoples with equity. 11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
      let the sea resound, and all that is in it; 12 let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them.
      Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy; 13 they will sing before the LORD, for he comes,
      he comes to judge the earth.
      He will judge the world in righteousness
      and the peoples in his truth.Â
