Proverbs 12 - Rules of Righteousness

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

3 A man cannot be established through wickedness,
but the righteous cannot be uprooted.

5 The plans of the righteous are just,
but the advice of the wicked is deceitful.

7 Wicked men are overthrown and are no more,
but the house of the righteous stands firm.

10 A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal,
but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.

12 The wicked desire the plunder of evil men,
but the root of the righteous flourishes.

13 An evil man is trapped by his sinful talk,
but a righteous man escapes trouble.

21 No harm befalls the righteous,
but the wicked have their fill of …

Was Solomon a Republican?

 Proverbs 12
11 He who works his land will have abundant food,
but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment.
I laughed this morning when I saw this verse that accurately describes my perspective on a significant portion of Democrats vs. Republicans… or more accurately, Liberals vs. Conservatives.  Please note that I am not talking about the majority of left-leaning people I know, who are simply trying to pick the most compassionate perspective they can, or are justifiably outraged at historical misjudgements of the right, but I am talking about liberals who do not realize how their policies and approaches create the very conditions of social inequity and economic hardship they seek (or purport) to prevent… policies that come from emotion-based …

Proverbs 11 - The Wealth of Righteousness

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

In Proverbs 8, Jesus has the following to say about righteousness:
20 I walk in the way of righteousness,
       along the paths of justice,

21 bestowing wealth on those who love me
       and making their treasuries full.
But then, in Proverbs 11, Solomon writes the following wisdom about righteousness:
4 Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath,
       but righteousness delivers from death.

5 The righteousness of the blameless makes a straight way for them,
but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.

6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them,
but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.
At first glance, verse 4 appears to conflict with Jesus’ words in Proverbs 8.  Assuming a righteous person …

Proverbs 8 - Following Jesus to Our Mansion

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Well, I’m through all of the “righteousness” verses in Psalms, and have moved on to Proverbs.  The word righteousness doesn’t appear nearly as often in Proverbs, about 15 times.  The first one is Proverbs 8:20.

As I have written in Creation Account in Proverbs, Proverbs 8 is a biographical account of the personification of wisdom, as if a woman.  Wisdom, throughout the first half of Proverbs, is the opposite and counterpart to the Adulteress, who represents Satan and the sinful life we are all tempted to lead to varying degrees and at various times.  Wisdom however is there to rescue us, to shelter us, but we don’t always see Her or hear Her, though she be right …

Psalm 145 - Any good in you was in Him first

Monday, April 20th, 2009

 1 I will exalt you, my God the King;
I will praise your name for ever and ever.
This isn’t the point of this Psalm, but it dawns on me reading this first verse that David was king, but God was David’s.  The buck usually stops with the king, but this realized it stopped with the King.  We should all realize that when we get fat-headed about our role in life.  If you are husband, then remember God is the church’s Husband.  If you are a father, remember God is your Heavenly Father.  If are any kind of authority, remember as Paul wrote that all authority derives from God.
2 Every day I will praise you
       and extol your …

Psalm 143

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

This Psalm swings back from discussing a human righteousness, over to God’s.  David is looking for shelter, and is looking for it in God’s righteousness.
1 O LORD, hear my prayer,
       listen to my cry for mercy;
       in your faithfulness and righteousness
       come to my relief.
Based on the context, God’s justice would seem the most likely aspect of God’s righteousness that David is referring to.  However, that I’m starting to think of God’s zealousness for His honor as part of His righteousness, and in turn thinking of purity of relationship as the primary manifestation of that zealousness, the combination sheds some light on one of David’s primary concerns when makes his request.
2 Do not bring your servant …

Psalm 132 - Praying for God

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Now here’s something I’ve never thought of before, but David wanted God to feel God.  He wanted God to feel loved.  He wanted God to feel rested.  Here is one of David’s prayers:
3 “I will not enter my house
       or go to my bed-

4 I will allow no sleep to my eyes,
       no slumber to my eyelids,

5 till I find a place for the LORD,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”
…and another…
 7 “Let us go to his dwelling place;
let us worship at his footstool-

8 arise, O LORD, and come to your resting place,
you and the ark of your might.

9 May your priests be clothed …

Psalm 119 - Striving for righteousness

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Psalm is looooong.  But it’s all about righteousness, though the actual word is only used twice in all of its 176 verses…

‘ Aleph
1 [a] Blessed are they whose ways are blameless,
who walk according to the law of the LORD.
2 Blessed are they who keep his statutes
and seek him with all their heart.
 3 They do nothing wrong;
       they walk in his ways.

4 You have laid down precepts
that are to be fully obeyed.

5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast
       in obeying your decrees!

6 Then I would not be put to shame
when I consider all your commands.

 7 I will praise …

Psalm 112 - God’s Promises to the Righteous

Monday, April 13th, 2009

After having a renewed understanding that righteousness (believing God, obeying Him, being zealous for His honor) consists of maintaining purity in my relationship with God, it was very instructive to read this Psalm, to see the benefits of maintaining that purity.  As you read the psalm, picture someone whose relationship with God is of utmost importance to them, where it’s a priority, and they are sincere in desiring it and maintaining it.
 1 Praise the LORD.
Blessed is the man who fears the LORD,
who finds great delight in his commands.

 2 His children will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.

3 Wealth and riches are in his house,
       and his …

Psalm 111 - God’s Righteousness rivisited

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

3 Glorious and majestic are his deeds,
       and his righteousness endures forever.
Previously, the only ingredient of righteousness that I had found for God was justice… He is just.  But, after studying Psalm 106 - Another ingredient of Righteousness, God’s righteousness has more meaning to me than before.  According to Psalm 106, we are credited with righteousness if we are zealous for God’s honor.  In fact, I learned that Phinehas was as zealous as God for His honor!  Now, I still need to think about exactly what a modern person can do out of zealousness for God’s honor, but what this says about God is that part …
