Amos 5 - Your righteousness is your portion of God

7 You who turn justice into bitterness
and cast righteousness to the ground

8 (he who made the Pleiades and Orion,
       who turns blackness into dawn
       and darkens day into night,
who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out over the face of the land—
       the LORD is his name-

9 he flashes destruction on the stronghold
and brings the fortified city to ruin)

Amos is calling Israel to repent of their sins, describing them as casting righteousness to the ground… and he goes on to describe righteousness, it turns out that it is God whom they have casted to the ground.

God is the embodiment of righteousness.

When God is crediting us with righteousness, it is Himself of which He is giving.

When we turn from wickedness to righteousness, we are turning to Him.

When we turn from righteousness to wickedness, we are turning from Him.

This is why the righteous live and the wicked condemned… having God you will live, casting Him aside you will be condemned.

That is why condemning people can bring them to God… but they have to know or be capable of discovering that what they are experiencing is their own forsaking of God.  Without God, they are without His blessing, without His cover, without His love.  And yet, letting them experience that, those who will come back, is one of the greatest forms of love, because to stay with those who forsake Him, to remain in their presence, and keep them covered, is pity that will get them sent to Hell.
