Genesis 10 - Noah’s Family Tree - Shem
Noah > Shem
Shem is mentioned in 17 verses of the Bible. His name is the original derivation of the word Semitic, the root of the word Anti-semitic. 13 of the verses pertain to his lineage and/or the flood…
- Genesis 5:32 - After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth.
- Genesis 6:10 - Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.
- Genesis 7:13 - On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark.
- Genesis 9:18 - [ The Sons of Noah ] The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.)
- Genesis 10:1 - [ The Table of Nations ] This is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah’s sons, who themselves had sons after the flood.
- Genesis 10:21 - The Semites Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.
- Genesis 10:22 - The sons of Shem: Elam, Ashur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram.
- Genesis 10:31 - These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.
- Genesis 11:10 - [ From Shem to Abram ] This is the account of Shem’s family line. Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad.
- Genesis 11:11 - And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
- 1 Chronicles 1:4 - The sons of Noah: Shem, Ham and Japheth.
- 1 Chronicles 1:17 - The Semites The sons of Shem: Elam, Ashur, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram. The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether and Meshek.
- 1 Chronicles 1:24 - Shem, Arphaxad, Shelah,
- Luke 3:36 - the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,
The others have to do with the choosing Shem as the blessed line from Noah, in Genesis 9…
- Genesis 9:23 - But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.
- Genesis 9:26 - He also said, “Praise be to the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem.
- Genesis 9:27 - May God extend Japheth’s territory; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.”
Apparently Ham disgraced his father, while Shem and Japheth respected him. Shem would give way to the messianic line.
Shem himself did not have a specific city, but defines the entire region of the middle east, from below Turkey down through Saudi Arabia.
