Genesis 1:3

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. - Genesis 1:3
I discussed this verse in detail in the word study on “Let”.  The gist of it is that the word “be” in God’s pronouncement is as well suited for describing the removal of some hindrance to light, as it is for describing the sudden appearance of it.  Also, because the darkness was “over the deep” in verse 2, we know the light in verse 3 was “over the deep” as well. Therefore, interpreting God’s statement as “Let any hindrance to seeing light over the deep be removed” is appropriate, as long as other geological and theological evidence exists to support, or even suggest, it.

For the geological …

Genesis 1:2b - “Hovering over the Waters”

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Genesis 1:2 - “Now the earth was unformed and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters.” (Soncino Press)

When the earth was covered with water, waiting for God to transform it into world abounding with life, God’s spirit hovered overhead.  We have scientifically established this point in history to have occurred about 3.9 billion years ago (Ga), and theologically established that God’s physical earthly presence always takes form as Jesus.  Jesus, speaking through Solomon in Proverbs, even testified to His own presence.

Though we know that Jesus was present, Genesis 1:2 states that it was the spirit of God that was hovering over the waters.  If …

Genesis 1:2a

Genesis 1:2 - “Now the earth was unformed and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters.” (Soncino Press)

Introduction
It is the geocreationist view that Genesis 1:2 is a historical statement of a moment that occurred approximately 3.9 billion years ago.  The mainstream scientific theories about that time, taking into account discoveries about zircon crystals, suggest that the earth had enough water for a worldwide ocean, but was experiencing a heightened level of meteor impacts.  These impacts were large enough to periodically vaporize the ocean, and possibly even blow away significant amounts of the carbon dioxide that was gathering in the early atmosphere.  The impacts also could have been …

Jesus on Mount Sinai

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

The Geocreationist position is that Jesus is God’s proxy on earth.  If true, then interpreting the Creation Account becomes a lot easier.  After all, if Jesus was physically here to see it, then it lets us interpret the creation account from a more informed perspective.  However, even this isn’t enough, because while the perspective might be Jesus’, the writing came from Moses.  We need some basis for interpreting Moses’ writing, not just the events that it records.  Fortunately, scripture provides us with that basis.  We will start with a well-known event in the New Testament, and then tie it to the Old (Emphasis added):
Now after six days, Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up on a high …

Jesus, the Father’s Proxy on Earth

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

Understanding Jesus’ submission to God the Father can help us understand the Creation account better, by giving us insight into how He and the Father work together.  In fact, Jesus Himself provides some of this insight in His Sermon on Mount (emphasis added):
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”(Matthew 5:16)
Love your enemies, “…that you may be sons of your Father in heaven…”  and “…perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.  Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them.  Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.”

When you pray, start your prayers as such: …

Jesus as God’s Servant

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

In the beginning, before the first creative pronouncement, there was God; and as we have seen, this means more than geology or tradition suggest.  In the single wonderful word Elohim, is described Jesus, playing a distinct creative role with the Father, a distinctly submissive role.  It was through Jesus that the Father created everything.  Given God’s sovereignty and omnipotence, this may not appear strictly necessary to us.  However, it demonstrates the relationship that defined Jesus’ earthly ministry, and is continuing today, even unto eternity.  Jesus described this relationship himself when He told the following parable:
A certain man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it, and did …

In the Beginning, Jesus

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

What do we know about “in the beginning?”  Well, after the beginning, we know that the heavens and the earth were there.  Before the beginning, there was only God.  But, what existed in between, that is, in the beginning, other than God?  As is often the case, where God provides a question in the Old Testament, He provides an answer in the New.  In this case, the answer is in John 1:1-3…
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”
In the beginning, Jesus was with God.  Knowing this, what …

Genesis 1:2 >> ~3.9 Ga

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

According to the NASA Science News, “Tiny zircons (zirconium silicate crystals) found in ancient stream deposits indicate that Earth developed continents and water — perhaps even oceans and environments in which microbial life could emerge — 4.3 billion to 4.4 billion years ago, remarkably soon after our planet formed.”

This seems to contradict the conventional scientific widsom, that the ancient ocean formed from outgassing and meteors about 3.9 billion years ago, 500 million years later than suggested by the zircon crystals.  However, the existence of the zircon crystals does not mean there was no volcanism or even later outgassing.  After all, the zircon crystals, though formed in an ocean, were fossilized in magma.  According to NASA’s “The Earth Observatory“:
“Thus, the …

Creation Account in Job

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

Toward the end of Job’s suffering, God answered his prayers, revealing both spiritual and geological details of the Creation that were not all recorded by Moses.  Jesus provided Solomon with a similar revalation, but the account in Job contains details not even recorded in Proverbs.  It even reveals where the “gap” championed by “Gap Theology” fits into the scheme of things!  Similar to Proverbs, the literary style requires no particular sequence for the events recorded, other than God’s train of thought.  However, just like Proverbs, given their conspicuous parallel with the physical reality of the first four days, a sequence of geological events is exactly what God provided.  The account is recorded in Job 38:
Day 1 - …

Creation Account in Proverbs

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, King Solomon recorded (in Proverbs 8:27 – 30a) an eye witness testimony of Jesus, where He revealed geological details of the Creation that were not all recorded by Moses.  In a strictly literary sense, no particular sequence is required for the events recorded.  However, given their conspicuous parallel with the physical reality of the first four days, a sequence of geological events is exactly what Jesus provided.
Day 1 - When He prepared the heavens, I was there,
Day 1 - When He drew a circle on the face of the deep,
Day 2 - When He established the clouds above,
Day 2 - When He strengthened the fountains of the deep,
Day …
