Throughout my study of righteousness, I have only found two criteria defining man’s righteousness:

Believe the Lord
Genesis 15:6
Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

 6 The LORD works righteousness
       and justice for all the oppressed.

 17 But from everlasting to everlasting
       the LORD’s love is with those who fear him,
       and his righteousness with their children’s children-

 18 with those who keep his covenant
       and remember to obey his precepts.
How does “work” righteousness and justice?  What does that mean?  It sounds kind of weird as a description of what God does, like when you a hairdresser is going to “work their magic”… it means they’re going to do what they do, and so it is with God.  He’ll do what He does.  He is just, and he’ll give the oppressed justice.

Christians do not look forward to God’s Judgment.  They lament it.  They avoid the world and don’t think about it, or they revel in what God will do to those evil ones, or pronounce God’s judgment on those who have got it coming.  Such perpsectives are not rooted in belief and obedience, but in self-righteousness, arrogance, and false security.

It is true that God will punish those “evil one” who “have it coming”.  However, does so in righteousness and justice.  By acting for justice, God is not being emotional.  Sure, He’ll get angry, but He doesn’t sin in that anger.  God’s justice trumps God’s anger; sometimes it’s His mercy.  In regards to those times when He acts in His anger, His righteousness …

The first desire of the Psalmist is that even those outside his own country, even across the waters, would be a people that rejoice in God.
 2 Clouds and thick darkness surround him;
       righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
No one can set their eyes on God without dying, and so He is surrounded with smoke and darkness, to obscure His physical image.  However, the foundation of His Kingship over the world is righteousness and justice.
