Amos 5

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

 18 Woe to you who long
       for the day of the LORD!
       Why do you long for the day of the LORD ?
       That day will be darkness, not light.

 19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion
       only to meet a bear,
       as though he entered his house
       and rested his hand on the wall
       only to have a snake bite him.

 20 Will not the day of the LORD be darkness, not light—
       pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?

 21 “I hate, I despise your religious feasts;
       I cannot stand your assemblies.

 22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings,

Amos 5 - Your righteousness is your portion of God

Friday, August 7th, 2009

 7 You who turn justice into bitterness
       and cast righteousness to the ground

 8 (he who made the Pleiades and Orion,
       who turns blackness into dawn
       and darkens day into night,
       who calls for the waters of the sea
       and pours them out over the face of the land—
       the LORD is his name-

 9 he flashes destruction on the stronghold
       and brings the fortified city to ruin)
Amos is calling Israel to repent of their sins, describing them as casting righteousness to the ground… and he goes on to describe righteousness, it turns out that it is God whom they have casted to the ground.

God is the embodiment of righteousness.

When God is crediting …

Joel 2 - The Rules of the Game

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Yesterday, I posted on The Game of Life.  Well, the next scripture on righteousness explains to us some of the rules.
 11 The LORD thunders
       at the head of his army;
       his forces are beyond number,
       and mighty are those who obey his command.
       The day of the LORD is great;
       it is dreadful.
       Who can endure it?

 17 Let the priests, who minister before the LORD,
       weep between the temple porch and the altar.
       Let them say, “Spare your people, O LORD.
       Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn,
       a byword among the nations.
       Why should they say among the peoples,
       ‘Where …

The Game of Life

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Suppose two people are playing game.  Let’s say it is chess.  Each has 16 men on the board.  As the game proceeds, men are taken as each side tries to endanger the other’s king.  Eventually, one of the kings is in checkmate, and the game is over.  The players stand up and shake hands.  The loser has learned a lot and looks forward to the next game; the winner cannot believe what a loser his opponent was, and looks forward to humiliating him again in the future.

Suppose a group of people were playing a game of Monopoly.  They all start buying up properties and charging either other rent.  When all the properties are bought up one of them begins bargaining and trading, until he …

Hosea 10 - You reap what you sow… so sow rightouesness

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

 12 Sow for yourselves righteousness,
       reap the fruit of unfailing love,
       and break up your unplowed ground;
       for it is time to seek the LORD,
       until he comes
       and showers righteousness on you.
This gets back to Ezekiel 18 - The Fruits of Righteousness. It lists a bunch of actions show a man to be righteous.  However, we then went to Ezekiel 33 - Grace is by faith, not works, in the OT, which basically says that a man living in wickedness, who then lives out his remaining life in righteousness …
