Malachi 3 - Offering in Righteousness

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, 4 and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years.
After writing 2 solid chapters explaining to Judah why they are not in a good place, Malachi turns to a promise that God’s servant will come, and then …

Turning Justice into Poison

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

 12 Do horses run on the rocky crags?
       Does one plow there with oxen?
       But you have turned justice into poison
       and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness-

 13 you who rejoice in the conquest of Lo Debar
       and say, “Did we not take Karnaim by our own strength?”
There are certain things a man just doesn’t do.  You don’t drive your car to work on the sidewalk.  You don’t build a tree house on a city light pole… and you don’t brag about your ability to war when God is the one who gave you strength, and you merely an instrument for His justice.

I’ve written a lot about the use of war to achieve justice …

Daniel 12:3 - Leading others to Righteousness

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

3 Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.
I find it interesting that Daniel was told that we are too lead people to righteousness, and yet the goal of modern Judaism is not to do that, but to simply live righteously.  It is Christians who try and lead people to righteousness, specifically: belief, obedience, and zealousness for God’s name.

I believe this is one of the reasons God brought about the church.  It is sad to me, but as a rule my fellow Jews do not see it as their responsibility to add names to the book of life, except perhaps for …

Daniel 9

Friday, July 24th, 2009

 24 “Seventy ’sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy.

 25 “Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ’sevens,’ and sixty-two ’sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ’sevens,’ the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will …

Ezekiel 33 - Grace is by faith, not works, in the OT

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

 12 “Therefore, son of man, say to your countrymen, ‘The righteousness of the righteous man will not save him when he disobeys, and the wickedness of the wicked man will not cause him to fall when he turns from it. The righteous man, if he sins, will not be allowed to live because of his former righteousness.’ 13 If I tell the righteous man that he will surely live, but then he trusts in his righteousness and does evil, none of the righteous things he has done will be remembered; he will die for the evil he has done. 14 And if I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely …

Jeremiah 33 - Jesus is Coming to Israel (Part II)

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

 14 ” ‘The days are coming,’ declares the LORD, ‘when I will fulfill the gracious promise I made to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.

 15 ” ‘In those days and at that time
       I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line;
       he will do what is just and right in the land.

 16 In those days Judah will be saved
       and Jerusalem will live in safety.
       This is the name by which it will be called:
       The LORD Our Righteousness.’

 17 For this is what the LORD says: ‘David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of the house …

Jeremiah 9:24 - Boasting in the Lord

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

 23 This is what the LORD says:
       “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom
       or the strong man boast of his strength
       or the rich man boast of his riches,

 24 but let him who boasts boast about this:
       that he understands and knows me,
       that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness,
       justice and righteousness on earth,
       for in these I delight,”
       declares the LORD.
I am to boast, if I boast at all, that I understand God and know God.  That is a boast that I generally stay away from.  In other words, though I understand and know God, and I refrain from boasting it because I am imperfect and may not …

Isaiah 63

Isaiah 63
God’s Day of Vengeance and Redemption
 1 Who is this coming from Edom,
       from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson?
       Who is this, robed in splendor,
       striding forward in the greatness of his strength?
       “It is I, speaking in righteousness,
       mighty to save.”

 2 Why are your garments red,
       like those of one treading the winepress?

 3 “I have trodden the winepress alone;
       from the nations no one was with me.
       I trampled them in my anger
       and trod them down in my wrath;
       their blood spattered my garments,
       and I stained all my clothing.

 4 For the day of vengeance was in my heart,
       and the year of my redemption …

Isaiah 62 - Hope for Israel and me

Monday, June 15th, 2009

 1 For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent,
       for Jerusalem’s sake I will not remain quiet,
       till her righteousness shines out like the dawn,
       her salvation like a blazing torch.

 2 The nations will see your righteousness,
       and all kings your glory;
       you will be called by a new name
       that the mouth of the LORD will bestow.

- - -

 4 No longer will they call you Deserted,
       or name your land Desolate.
       But you will be called Hephzibah,
       and your land Beulah;
       for the LORD will take delight in you,
       and your land will be married.

 5 As a young man marries a maiden,
       so will your sons marry …

Isaiah 61

Friday, June 12th, 2009

 1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
       because the LORD has anointed me
       to preach good news to the poor.
       He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
       to proclaim freedom for the captives
       and release from darkness for the prisoners,
 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor (Christ’s birth?)
       and the day of vengeance of our God, (Christ’s reign?)
       to comfort all who mourn,
The following message is to liberate the poor, brokenhearted, captives, and prisoners, by speaking of Christ’s birth and His subsequent reign. (I beleive this to be a double-prophecy, where Isaiah was speaking of events to come soon as well as events to come much much …
