Reconciling Evolution with Scripture (Part 2)

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Continuing on with our line of inquiry from Reconciling Evolution with Scripture, it is instructive to review exactly what Young Earthers tend to find wrong with Evolution: the idea that the fortuitous changes recorded in the fossil record could possibly be random.  Nobody argues with the concept of Natural Selection itself, which deals the survivability of a species once a change has occurred. What people do argue against however is the idea that these changes can occur on their own and at random.  There are several approaches to this, several particular criticisms, and several responses to each, and I do not think I need to cover them all. However, I don’t have …

Genesis 2 - A recall of Genesis 1?

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

The general consensus of Genesis 2, whether one be atheist or Young Earther, is that the creation account in Genesis 2 generally recounts the creation described in Genesis 1.  This is mostly because Genesis 2 appears to describe creation of the very same items described in the 6 days of Creation of Genesis 1.  Other observations are the sudden change in style, and the similarities to creation myths from contemporary cultures that Moses would have known about when he wrote Genesis.  However, some people treat Genesis 2 as sequential with Genesis 1.  For me, I see a combination of the two.

In my opinion, Genesis 2 contains both a summary of Genesis 1, and then continues beyond it.  However, I don’t …

Sin - What is it?

Friday, April 30th, 2010

As I’ve picked up with blogging on Geocreationism again, I will eventually arrive at the place where Adam and Eve commit the first sin… what Adam is credited with as “Original Sin”.  I figured I would get a leg up on what scripture has to say about it.

The first verse in the Bible that uses the word “sin” is actually after the first sin has been committed.  The verse is Genesis 4:7, and the passage reads as follows:
1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man.” 2 Later she gave birth to his …

Obama-care Already Beginning to Erode Our Quality of Life

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

I thought I would share this snippet from my Open Enrollment form this year for my medical coverage:

“The recently enacted health care reform law prohibits health flexible spending accounts and health reimbursement arrangement from reimbursing for OTC drug expenses for taxable years beginning after December 31, 2010.”
Obama has said that if I like my plan, I can keep it… implying no negative impact to me.  Though admittedly not a huge impact, very small in fact, this is a negative non-zero impact.  Also notice this will disproportionately impact lower income families who try to minimize their costs by treating with common-sense and over-the-counter medications before going to the doctor.

Where I might have welcomed a change to my plan, is where …

2 Peter 2 - Only true prophets preach righteousness

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Peter is writing a message of righteousness, aboudn the opportunity for belief and obedience through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, leading first to goodness and then finally to love.  However, as Peter points out, there are false prophets who come with messages all the time.  They’re easy to dismiss if you refuse to acknowledge any and all messengers regardless of message.  However, true prophets, such as Peter, are obliged to come and deliver their message, because their message is not for storing away secretly.  It is for sharing, for the benefit of all, not only for the benefit of the prophet.  False prophets are of a different ilk, spreadking messages only for their own good, and should be guarded against.  But, …

2 Peter 1 - The Message of Righteousness Comes only from the Righteous

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

In 2 Peter 1, Peter emphatically urges people to act on what they know of Christ and God, lest they backslide.  Not all Christians will backslide, but you do not know for sure if you are one of the them who will, and because a man can backslide to the point of abandoning all hope in God, a point at which you would willfully step away from God’s election, you must therefore do all you can to not become one of them.  Of course, backsliding does not surely result in abandonding your salvation, but it potentially does.  You may even be sure that you would never walk away, but then what of your witness to others?  And frankly, why take that chance? And taking chances aside, just look at …

2 Peter - Reflections on Righteousness

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

I find it interesting that the last Biblical book on righteousness would amount to a treatise on righteousness.  Just in the first 10 verses (2 Peter 1 - From righteousness to righteousness: Re-created in God’s Image, 2 Peter 1: Righteousness Leads to Christ’s Love Manifested in You), we have seen confirmation of the following:

Jesus is righteous, and through Him we receive righteousness (v. 1)
Jesus provides us promises that we should believe (v. 4), and of course belieiving is accounted to us righteousness
We are to love others in obedience (vv. 5-8)
Lack of obedience …

Interesting Article on When the Old Testament was Written

Friday, February 12th, 2010

http://www.livescience.com/history/earliest-hebrew-text-100115.html

Says the oldest known Hebrew writing was 600B.C., and it now 1000 B.C. Yet, my own study Bible has scriptures being written long before even that.  Interesting.

I googled on what language Moses wrote in, and found this blog posting.  Good reading: http://gotbible.blogspot.com/2007/07/did-moses-write-pentateuch.html

James 2 - Is faith without works possible?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

In my last post, I attempted to explain James’ assertion that faith without works is dead.  I re-read my post, and though I said it was now simple, what I wrote isn’t.  Sorry about that.  Sometimes I get a picture in my head, and the picture is simple to look at… in my head.  How to get you to see it?
20You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by …

Hebrews 12 - God’s Discipline Produces Righteousness

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Has God ever seen you though something you weren’t sure you were supposed to do? How about something you were sure about, but you did it anyway? He saw you through that, too, didn’t He?  Well, that’s the kind of God He is.  But, here’s the thing… God will lead into things you wouldn’t expect Him to, and then seem to go silent as you cope with the most difficult situation you’ve ever faced.  Sometimes, that’s just how it is.  Other times, it brings on transformational change, as you make changes in yourself, your outlook, your attitude… and these are the times that came to mind as I read through Hebrews 12, leading in to our next scripture on righteousness.
 1Therefore, since we are …
