Genesis 1:1a - In the Beginning, God...

Genesis 1:1 - “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

In the beginning, God…”, or Elohim as it is renderred in the Hebrew.  The Jewish perspective is that Elohim, a plural form of God’s name, is an expression of God's majesty and unequaled greatness.  This view is true, as far it goes.

For the Christian, Elohim is a reference to God's plural nature: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Elohim created the the heavens and the earth.

According to John 1:1-3 (emphasis added), “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

Compare this to Proverbs 8:22-26 (emphasis added), "The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, before His works of old.  I have been established from everlasting, from the beginning, before there was ever an earthWhen there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no fountains abounding with water.  Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I was brought forth; while as yet He had not made the earth or the fields, or the primal dust of the world.

In the beginning, Jesus was with the Father. Speaking as Wisdom personified in Proverbs 8:27-30a, Jesus elaborates on His role (emphasis added): "When He prepared the heavens, I was there, when He drew a circle on the face of the deep, when He established the clouds above, when He strengthened the fountains of the deep, when He assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters would not transgress His command, when He marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside Him as a master craftsman;"

After verse 1, Jesus could have stepped back until Mary was pregnant. But He didn't. He stayed by the Father's side, as a master craftsman. While He was there, He could have just watched, but He didn't. Everything made was made through Him. We were created as much through God the Son as we were God the Father. Jesus could have told His helper, The Holy Spirit, that He'd be back, and to look after the place while He was gone. We even know the Holy Spirit was there; He was hovering over the deep. But, He didn't do that either. He didn't leave. After verse 1, Jesus didn’t go anywhere. As His Father's agent of Creation, Jesus had a lot of work ahead of Him.
