A Geo-Creationist View of Genesis 1
Geo-Creationism is the term I use to describe the theory that a literal interpretation of Genesis matches the geologic record. There are other creation theories that make the same claim, such as the Day-Age Theory, Theological Evolution, and the Gap Theory, among others. However, this creation theory is different in that not only is the mainstream understanding of the earth’s development completely preserved, but Genesis 1 and 2 are considered genuine historical records of it. Here is the gist of the theory:
The universe was created, the milky way formed, our solar system formed within it, and then around 4.5 billion years ago, a spherical molten glob that would become the earth formed. Around 4.4 billion years ago, the earth cooled enough for outgassing to begin, and an ocean began to form. The earth was then continuously bombarded by meteors until around 3.9 billion years ago. The larger meteor hits would vaporize the ocean, and and possibly blow away part of the atmosphere. It left a black sky, and thick clouds. Combined with the dim sun, the sky was fairly dark. As described in Genesis 1:2, “Darkness was over the deep”.  As described in Job 38:9, “I made a cloud its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band.”
As the waters rained back down onto the earth, Jesus hovered over them. As He was looking out at the darkness, God the Father said to Him, “Let there be light.” Though meteor activity reached a height 3.9 Ga (billion years ago), it stopped pretty suddenly, allowing an ancient atmosphere to finally form uninterrupted, eventually scattering the light over the earth and creating a bright hazy sky. Though it was still raining, and with the earth rotating beneath him, Jesus could see the clouds brighten. At some point, perhaps thousands or even millions of years later, He said the light was good and finally allowed evening to overtake him. Day 1 was over.
It is uncertain how long the rain continued, but it was so bad that essentially nothing but rain separated the clouds from the ocean, connecting the waters above to the waters below. Jesus saw this and God told him to separate the waters above from the waters below, creating a firmament in between. And so the rains ceased. The waters that remained in the sky were called Heaven. Jesus watched this process as the earth rotated beneath. When it was over, He allowed the evening to overtake Him. Day 2 was now over.
At this point, now around 3.8 to 3.85 billion years ago, the entire planet was saturated with water. There was absolutely no dry land. So, God told Jesus to let the waters be gathered into one place. He did so, and the land revealed began to dry. As it did, God told Jesus to let the land start producing plants, and so photosynthesis began. Fruit trees and vegetation would be several billion years off still, but God said to let it happen, and so Jesus did. As Jesus passed into the evening, Day 3 ended.
For the next 1.5 billion years or so, the atmosphere continued getting more and more hazy. The sun, moon, and stars were completely obscured from the earth’s surface. So, God told Jesus to let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens. For next 400,000 million years or so (from 2.3 to 1.9 billion years ago), Jesus hovered over the earth as it rotated beneath Him, and the skies eventually cleared enough to see the terrestrial lights. From the earth, they could now be used for governing the day and the night. God saw that this was good, and Jesus let evening overtake him. Day 4 was now over.
For the next 1.8 billion years or so, God allowed plants, animals, and dinasaurs of every kind to propagate and evolve. Satan was also given free reign over the earth, having been banished from Heaven with his followers. Fittingly, it was spiritually nighttime. Then, around 65 million years ago, God let hurl one more meteor at, and the earth was devastated. All dinosaur life was destroyed, and most other life was killed as well, but no all of it.
As Jesus surveyed the earth’s state, God had Him let the seas teem with life again, and had the birds rule the air. With no natural predators, the surviving birds had no problem propagating after their kind, and the surviving sea life swarmed at God’s command. Jesus let the night overcome him and Day 5 was over.
God then told Jesus have the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind. And so life evolved at Jesus’ command, propagating after their kind. Jesus was also told to create mankind, and instructed them to subdue the earth, and they did. It was now 180,000 years ago or so, and Jesus let the evening overcome him. Day 6 was now complete, and the processes necessary for life to continue flourishing, including evolution, were well under way, as God rested.
This is the basic premise of Geo-Creationism. The scientific theory is has been established by the mainstream. The task then is to show how scripture backs it up, and has backed it up all along.
